About The Project

Truly impressive work ethic…

Mr Strange owns a Victorian terrace property in the historic Suffolk town of Bury St Edmunds. When he purchased the house it had been unsympathetically modernised over a number of years and the original heritage of the property was a dim and distant memory. The windows and doors of the property had been particularly hard hit being replaced in the early 2000s with brown UPVC casement windows and doors!
Recognising the impact on the heritage of the building Mr Strange contacted Schnauber direct looking for advice on what could be done to rectify the situation with his house. He was keen to find out more information on our timber sash windows and the security features that could be provided with our timber heritage entrance doors.
After talking with Schnauber Mr Strange was confident that the company were specialists in the supply and fitting of timber windows and doors and were best placed to help him to restore the heritage appeal of the property whilst improving the security and energy efficiency performance, all within a manageable budget.
Although the property was old and the time frame for completion was tight the experienced team of Schnauber technicians had undertaken a stringent forecasting survey and were confident that the project would be straight forward and that they would finished before the Christmas holidays. This was a major factor for Mr Strange who wanted the installation “done and dusted” before a family holiday over the festive season. Thanks to the “truly impressive work ethic”, commitment and dedication of the Schnauber team the installation took just three days to complete.
The end result was that the project was completed on time and that Mr Strange regained the heritage aesthetic of his Victorian home and vastly improved the warmth and security of the property as well.

Mr Strange was very happy with our services and this is what he had to say in his testimonial:-

“I had three sash windows and a front door manufactured and installed by Schnauber at the end of 2016 and was delighted with the results. The quality of workmanship was excellent, the prices charged are highly competitive and their work ethic is truly impressive. My original stipulation was that the project should be completed by Christmas and, despite the really tight schedule, they pulled out all the stops and worked late into the evening to ensure that the job was completed on time and on budget. I would certainly avail myself of their services again in future and would have no hesitation in recommending them to other potential customers.”

Challenge

1. Busy Main Road and Security Concerns
Upon arrival, our team immediately had to address the challenge of working on a property located right beside a busy main road. The entrance leads straight onto the public pavement, so maintaining security and safe access during the timber window and door installation was essential. Ensuring the property remained protected while work was in progress was a key priority.

2. Poorly Installed uPVC Windows and Doors
Another major issue was the sub-standard installation carried out by the previous company. The old uPVC windows and doors had been poorly fitted, creating structural stress around the frames. Removing these outdated plastic units without causing damage required a high level of care, precision, and professional experience. Our goal was to extract the uPVC frames with minimal disturbance to the existing building fabric so we could prepare the openings for the new wooden windows and timber doors.

Solution

1. Securing the Property Before Work Began
Our skilled craftsmen began by securing the entire work area and ensuring the homeowner’s property remained safe. Despite the heavy foot traffic on the main road, our team planned strategically to maintain full security and minimise disruption throughout the timber window installation process.

2. Careful Removal of Old uPVC Windows
Removing the old uPVC windows required slow, methodical workmanship. Our installers used specialist tools and techniques to carefully detach the frames while protecting the surrounding timber, plaster, and brickwork. This level of attention to detail highlights the difference between a basic replacement and a professional wooden window and timber door installation carried out by trained craftsmen.

3. Installing Premium Timber Windows and Wooden Doors
Once every opening was fully inspected and prepared, we moved on to the most exciting stage — installing the new premium timber windows and bespoke wooden doors. These handcrafted units not only transformed the home’s appearance but also delivered major performance improvements in:

  • Thermal efficiency
  • Noise reduction
  • Enhanced security
  • Long-term durability
  • Traditional character and natural aesthetics

The transformation was immediate. The natural beauty and craftsmanship of real wood brought warmth and elegance that uPVC products simply cannot match. The high-quality installation ensures these timber windows and wooden doors will provide exceptional performance and timeless appeal for many years to come.
