Berners Street: terraces, passages and changing windows
The listed terrace at 23–29 Berners Street dates from the early to mid nineteenth century. Historic England describes white-brick houses, mainly with double-hung sash windows and glazing bars beneath stucco cornice lintels. It also records replacement casements at number 25, a cart entrance, and doorways grouped with a central passage at numbers 27 and 29.

For a terrace or converted property, identify shared passages and the ownership of each opening before arranging the visit. The building’s list entry and the council’s Article 4 information answer different questions. The former describes heritage interest; the latter needs checking for the precise address and proposed alteration.

Check the physical-alteration direction for the property
Ipswich publishes conservation area information and Article 4 guidance. Its Article 4 page also discusses changes of use, so use the section and map relevant to physical alterations when investigating window work. Check whether your actual property is affected and obtain council advice where the position is unclear.
For an affected frontage, assemble existing photographs, a marked-up elevation and details of the proposed materials before ordering. Do not assume a design will be acceptable because another house has it. Where only one window is being changed, show its relationship to the remaining windows.
If the address is a flat or has a shared entrance, tell us which floor requires work and who coordinates building access. Include the delivery route and any external access restrictions in the enquiry. The survey and quote can then distinguish the joinery from access equipment and making-good work that needs to be agreed.

Does every Ipswich Article 4 direction concern replacement windows? +
No. The council’s page includes physical alterations in conservation areas and changes of use. Check the relevant direction, map and property before drawing a conclusion about window work.
How much does a timber window cost? +
Every piece is made to measure, so price depends on size, style, timber and glazing. That’s why we offer a free home survey and a detailed, no-obligation quotation.
What should I record before replacing a period Ipswich door? +
Photograph the panel arrangement, glazing, fanlight, frame and surrounding details. Identify what is original or already altered where you know, and check any required consent for the proposed replacement.
Can a later casement in an Ipswich terrace be copied without further checks? +
Its presence is not approval. Berners Street’s entry records both sash windows and later casement replacements. Check the building’s designation, relevant direction and existing permissions before treating a neighbour’s alteration as a precedent. See the source record.
