Exquisite handcrafted sash windows — designed, crafted and installed by experts, to match Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian detailing perfectly.
Timber sash windows use sliding glazed sections within a wooden frame. Schnauber offers traditional cords-and-weights and spring-balanced options, alongside slimline glazing choices. For replacements, the survey should record the opening, sash proportions and existing details so the proposed window can be specified for the property rather than chosen from a standard size.
Schnauber sash windows combine traditional appearance with modern performance. Precision joinery, engineered timber and controlled manufacturing deliver long-term durability, smooth operation and improved thermal efficiency — without compromising historic sightlines.
Every window is manufactured to match original profiles, proportions and architectural detailing, ensuring visual consistency with Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian architecture.

Request a quotationThe sash window has been popular in Britain since the 17th century and was the most common style during the Victorian, Regency and Georgian periods. It comprises two sashes that slide up and down — an inner and outer sash hosted within a channel — and can open at the top, bottom or both. To achieve the heritage look, Schnauber uses a double glazed unit with Georgian bars applied on top of, between and inside the glazing. Available styles: spiral balance, cords & weights, and Heritage Slimlite.
Sash windows suit any room in your property. Ideally the window should be bigger than 90cm × 60cm — for the most attractive results we recommend a size over 1.1 metres.
If you live in a Grade I or II listed building or one of the UK's 8,000+ conservation areas, timber sash may be required — always check with your local Conservation Officer. They're also a defining feature when renovating Georgian, Regency or Victorian properties, and ideal where something in front of the window (like a sink or bath) makes an outward-opening casement impractical.
A choice of hardwood and softwood engineered timber finishes, depending on budget and visual specification. Historically painted white, but the selection of colours is unlimited — plus a wide selection of glass types and ironmongery.
Yes — all our wooden windows are manufactured from responsible, sustainable sources certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), with the latest water-resistant paint finishes.
One sash window takes our team a day to install, including all architraves and finishing touches.
Generally easier than casements — fewer moving parts means less to go wrong. Schnauber windows are pre-treated with a non-toxic wood preservative, so maintenance is minimal: we recommend every 5–10 years depending on your environment.
Sash windows are a safer option than casements if you have young children, and ours include an additional safety feature offering greater protection against burglary. Aesthetically, you can't tell the difference between a traditional single-pane sash with Georgian bars and our Heritage Slimlite with separate panes.
Record the opening size, sash proportions, glazing-bar layout and any original mouldings to retain. Discuss cords-and-weights or spring balance and the glazing options. If the building has heritage controls, check the proposed work with the relevant authority before ordering.
