London Road’s different elevations tell different stories
At 36 London Road, the listed early-nineteenth-century house combines timber framing with a rendered brick front. Historic England records twelve-pane sashes, a tripartite window and a canted first-floor oriel on the south-east elevation. The garden elevation is weatherboarded and has its own sash arrangement and porch. The central front doorway includes panelled pilasters and a rectangular fanlight.

This is a useful Maldon example of why one front photograph is insufficient for a whole-house project. Separate the oriel, garden windows and main entrance on the schedule. Record the material surrounding each frame so the quote can distinguish joinery from render, boarding and decorative trim.

Record exposure, retained fabric and conservation information
Check the property against the council’s heritage map and read the Maldon appraisal where relevant. Ask the council about any consent needed for the particular proposal. A town-wide description cannot establish the status of an individual house or the acceptability of its replacement windows.
If one elevation is noticeably more exposed to weather, tell us which one and photograph the sill, paint condition and adjoining wall. This is a question about the actual building: the town name alone does not define the exposure of every opening. Ask the quotation to identify the proposed finish and maintenance requirements.
For rear doors, describe the route through the house or side access and the space outside the threshold. Discuss the movement of French, bifold or sliding doors in relation to that space. The survey should establish the opening and fitting scope before a final specification or appointment for installation is agreed.

How do I check whether my Maldon house is in the conservation area? +
Use Maldon District Council’s heritage asset map and the relevant conservation documents. If the boundary or building status is unclear, ask the council about the address before deciding on external changes.
How much does a timber window cost? +
Every piece is made to measure, so price depends on size, style, timber and glazing. That’s why we offer a free home survey and a detailed, no-obligation quotation.
Should every Maldon window have the same exposure specification? +
Describe the actual setting of each elevation. Tell us about weathering, shelter and access for maintenance, then ask for the proposed finish and hardware to be identified in the quotation.
Why include the garden elevation in a Maldon heritage enquiry? +
The London Road example has weatherboarding and a different window arrangement at the rear, alongside an oriel on a side elevation. Each face can have distinct details that a front-only survey brief would overlook. See the source record.
