Knightsfield’s post-war timber windows

Welwyn Garden City’s listed housing is not confined to its earliest years. Numbers 105–125 Knightsfield form part of a 1955–56 scheme by Louis de Soissons, Peacock, Hodges and Robertson. Historic England records houses, flats and maisonettes with small-paned timber casements, occasional double-hung sashes and French windows serving balconies. The composition continues a Georgian-influenced architectural approach in post-war housing.

Source: Historic England: 105–125 Knightsfield, Welwyn Garden City.

A Knightsfield enquiry should therefore identify the dwelling type and the particular block. Balcony openings, ordinary casements and the occasional sash need separate entries. Council planning requirements and the Estate Management Scheme remain distinct checks; neither the post-war date nor the timber material alone establishes what can be changed.

Keep Estate Management and planning checks distinct

Welwyn Hatfield administers the Estate Management Scheme and provides an interactive map and design guidance. Use these to check the address and relevant consent process. Establish separately whether planning permission or other approval is needed; do not assume that one decision resolves every requirement.

Keep any existing drawings or decisions with the window schedule. Note the frame colour, visible widths, opening direction and arrangement of fixed and opening panes. If you are proposing a change, mark it explicitly rather than letting it disappear into a general request for replacement windows. The final specification should reflect the details actually agreed.

Welwyn Garden City window and door questions

Is Estate Management consent the same as planning permission? +

Treat them as separate checks. Use the council’s Estate Management guidance to establish the scheme requirements for the address and confirm separately which planning or other approvals are needed.

How much does a timber window cost? +

Every piece is made to measure, so price depends on size, style, timber and glazing. That’s why we offer a free home survey and a detailed, no-obligation quotation.

What details should I record before replacing Garden City windows? +

Photograph the full frontage, then record pane divisions, opening lights, frame widths and colour. Include relevant drawings or existing decisions, and identify any proposed change from the present design.

Can post-war Welwyn housing still be listed? +

Yes. The Knightsfield group at 105–125 dates from 1955–56 and is Grade II listed. Its recorded timber casements, sashes and balcony French windows show why age assumptions should not replace an address check. See the source record.
