Alma Street’s concealed sash boxes and individual doorcases

The listed houses at 9–15 Alma Street date from around 1840. Historic England records red brick, small-paned hornless sashes in concealed boxes and panelled entrance doors. Three doorcases are stucco with dentilled hoods, while number 15 has a fluted timber case. Rear access arches are also identified. Even this short group has variations worth retaining in a window and door schedule.

For an Alma Street terrace, show the side of the sash opening and the door hood in close-up. Concealed boxes should not be confused with the visible glazing bars. Note rear access independently of the front-door width, and identify any shared route when discussing how joinery will reach the property.

Coverage and visiting your Wivenhoe property

Wivenhoe is included in our Colchester service area for surveys and installation.

Colchester coverage and local guides. Related nearby coverage: West Mersea, Colchester.

We arrange the survey at the Wivenhoe address. If there are steps, a shared passage or limited space at the entrance, include that information with the enquiry. Give the route to the rooms and rear elevation, and tell us who can provide access; a survey appointment does not require a journey to an office.

Check the status of the document you are using

Use the neighbourhood-plan document register to identify the Wivenhoe appraisal’s status, then confirm the current conservation boundary and requirements with Colchester City Council. Do not present an old draft appraisal as an approval for replacement windows. Keep any address-specific advice and drawings with your project information.

Where a house has been altered over time, photograph each elevation and separate older joinery from the later addition. For a proposed garden door, show the opening, threshold and level outside. Discuss sash, casement, French or sliding-door options against that evidence rather than assuming the entire building should use one style.

Wivenhoe window and door questions

Is the 2007 Wivenhoe appraisal an adopted document? +

The neighbourhood-plan document register identifies it as a draft that was never formally adopted. Check current guidance and boundaries with Colchester City Council before relying on it for a proposal.

How much does a timber window cost? +

Every piece is made to measure, so price depends on size, style, timber and glazing. That’s why we offer a free home survey and a detailed, no-obligation quotation.

Can I include a garden door and front windows in one Wivenhoe enquiry? +

Yes. Use separate schedule entries and photographs for the front windows and garden opening. Explain whether the masonry opening will change and show the outside level at the proposed threshold.

Should neighbouring Alma Street doorcases all be made identical? +

The entry for 9–15 records a timber doorcase at number 15 alongside stucco cases at the other houses. Establish whether a difference is historic before standardising the entrances as part of a replacement project. See the source record.
